The Biodiversity Concept

Optimally by increasing local diversity we will in whole increase our biodiversity. In E.O. Wilson’s travels he came to realize the wondrous diversity of life. He states that “Biological diversity is the key to the maintenance of the world as we know it. Life in a local site struck down by a passing storm springs back quickly: opportunistic species rush in, to fill the spaces. They entrain the succession that circles back to something resembling the original state of the environment.”As we saturate our lands with development and pollution we ultimately are bringing a repetition of circling storms that our life can not support.
The biodiversity concept is a way of thinking of many ecological planners since the inception of the The Diversity of Life by E.O. Wilson. In order to restore and protect many of species today we need to plan in away that will keep intact this ecosystem that provides us with life.
Planning for biodiversity is a difficult task but one that should be implemented in current ecosystem management. The Nature Conservancy has developed a worldly concept that allows practitioners a guide to preserve the integrity of our future species. By following a Four R Framework and a Seven Step Concept in managing conservation targets it will help pinpoint areas of biological concern. For example on a property do we want to manage for early-successional targets such as woodcock to bring back historical populations. Will this essentially increase biodiversity so that levels of the ecosystem remain intact? In part yes, however, depending on the site location and area it may not be the best alternative. We may want to provide habitat that encompasses many other species at the same time.
Part of my developing of projects will be based on this concept as a whole with emphasis on sustainability. By working with Forest and Water Solutions I can develop a strategic concept in habitat management that will not only bring new life to your property but life to the community as a whole. By further instituting a sustainability marker, there will be less impact to the environment and a better overall productive ecosystem. And finally by adopting an Aldo Leopold concept, Forest and Water Solutions will manage with a philosophy of "taking care of the land".
